Plates (Electrodes) Plate construction is the key to producing a good battery. Recognizing this, we utilizes the latest technology and equipment to cast lead tin alloy grids free of antimony. An adequate amount of tin in the grid alloy imparts strength to the plate and guarantees durability even in extensive cycle service. Lead oxide paste is added to the grid to form the electrically active material. In the charged state, the negative plate paste is pure lead and that of the positive lead dioxide. Both of these are in a porous form to optimize surface area and thereby maximize capacity. Separators Separators are made of woven glass fiber cloth with high heat and oxidation resistance. The material further offers superior electrolyte absorption and retaining ability, as well as excellent ion conductivity. Electrolyte Immobilized dilute sulphuric acid : H2SO4. Container Case material is either ABS, a high-impact proof plastic resin, styrene, or a polypropylenepolyethylene copolymer with resistance to chemicals and flammability. Terminals Depending on the model, batteries come either with Faston type terminals made of tin plated brass, post type terminals of the same composition with threaded nut and bolt hardware, or heavy duty flag terminals made of lead alloy. A special epoxy is used as sealing material surrounding the terminals. Relief Valve In case of excessive gas pressure build-up inside the battery (usually caused by abnormal charging) the relief valve will open and relieve the pressure. The one-way valve not only ensures that no air gets into the battery where the oxygen would react with the plates causing internal discharge, but also represents an important safety device in the event of excessive overcharge. Vent release pressure is between 4-6 psi; the seal ring material is neoprene rubber. Case Sealing Depending on model, the case sealing is tongue and groove with polyurethane, epoxy, or heat seal. Lead acid batteries can be charged with different charging characteristics. It is important that the maximum charging current is never more than the battery specification. Overcharging of the battery is just as bad as an insufficient charge as both have a serious impact on the lifetime of the battery. Therefore, the charging technology chosen has a major influence on the rechargeable lead acid battery life and durability. SES has chargers with IV and IVOV characteristics in its lead acid standard charger range. IV Charging Technology This technology charges the rechargeable lead acid battery with a limited current. The current decreases slowly during the last charging phase up to the end charge voltage. The charger can be left connected to the battery during charging. IVOV Charging Technology During charging with the IVOV technology the battery first will be charged with a regulated charging current (cycle mode) until its voltage reaches a pre-defined value (2.45 V per cell). After the current has decreased to a defined lower value the charging voltage will be reduced to 2.3 V per cell to avoid damaging by gassing (floating mode). In comparison to the IV technology the charging with the IVOV characteristic achieves a considerably shorter charging time. While the charger is in operation it can be left connected to the battery. Due to an implemented hysteresis, function of the charging operation restarts when the battery voltage falls below a predefined value. |
